Mr.Maru: Why are you so sad Sparky?
Sparky: The poodle next door has a new doghouse.
Mr.Maru: You do, too. It has two balconies.
Sparky: Yes, but the poodle's doghouse has three balconies and a pool.
Mr.Maru: You're scared of water.
Sparky: That doesn't matter. I'm still envious. That poodle is always buying nicer things.
Mr.Maru: Maybe you should get a job.
Sparky: That is too much. I can't work!
What is the difference between 'jealous', 'envious' and 'enviable'? These words can be confusing sometimes. Let's go over some examples and rules for using each.
What is the definition of 'jealous'?
If you are jealous, you feel like you have a rival or competitor. You have a strong dislike or hatred for the person that has something. You are mostly angry at a person that has something you think you should have. For example,
- My new co-worker is dating a girl that I wanted to date for a long time. I am so jealous. I'm not going to help him at work anymore.
- My neighbor bought a new Mercedes Benz. I think he was jealous of my Porsche. He likes to park it in front of his house so I can see it.
Jealous or jealousy is often used to talk about relationships. For example,
- My girlfriend's jealous ex-boyfriend wants to fight me. I'm a little scared.
- Blinded by jealousy she drove to her ex-boyfriend's new girlfriend's house and threw eggs at her car.
What is the definition of 'envious'?
The word 'envious' has a little nicer meaning. If you are envious, you feel unhappy or sad that you don't have what someone else has. You don't hate the person that has those things, you just feel like you should have them too. For example,
- Bob just got promoted at work. I'm so envious. I want to get promoted, but I haven't worked very hard.
- I'm envious of my friend's new TV. I'm going to start saving money so I can buy one like that.
Although 'envious' is a little more positive than 'jealous', it can still have a bad meaning. Be careful when using this word in writing. You might be misunderstood without gestures or tone of voice. When speaking, you can use the phrase 'I'm so jealous!' or 'I'm so envious!' almost interchangeable. Both of these phrases mean 'I'm so happy for you, I wish I could do that or have that!'.
What is the definition of 'enviable'?
The word 'enviable' has the most positive of feelings of all these words. It means 'exciting envy' or 'fortunate or very desirable'. This word is often used to describe positions or responsibilities. For example,
- Being a doctor is a very enviable job.
- Getting job offers from two companies places him in an enviable position.
