: 영어의 혼성어 - ginormous/fantabulous/chillax/frenemy/staycation
혼성(混成) : 의미와 어형이 비슷한 두 개의 단어 또는 어구, 때로는 구문이 서로 유추적인 변화를 일으켜 하나의 새로운 단어나 어구, 구문 따위를 만드는 일.
그런고로 이번에는 5가지의 혼성어를 알아보려고 해요. 팟캐스트 듣는데 정리해 두면 좋을 듯 하여.. 참고로 매우 캐쥬얼한;; 표현(slang)이기 때문에 공식적인 석상에서 말을 한다거나, 발표해야 하는 글 같은 경우에는 사용하지 않습니다. 친구들끼리 쓰는 표현인 듯 해요!!!
1. ginormous 미국식 [dƷaɪ|nɔ:rməs] 
/ 영국식 [dƷaɪ|nɔ:məs]
- blend of 'giant 'or 'gigantic' and 'enormous'
[형용사] very large, really really really big
거대한 이라는 뜻을 가진 giantic 과 enormous 가 섞여서 ginormous라는 단어가 만들어짐. 거대한 이라는 뜻을 가진 두 단어가 뭉쳐져서 뜻은 역시 '엄청 큰, 어마어마한'. 엄청나게 큰것을 강조해서 표현하고 싶을때 사용.
ex) I ate ginormous cookies like my head.
내 머리만한 엄청 큰 쿠기 먹었어.
2. fantabulous 미국∙영국 [fæntǽbjuləs]
- blend of 'fantastic' + 'fabulous'
[형용사] 믿을 수 없을 만큼 훌륭한, 최고의
환상적인 이라는 비슷한 뜻을 가진 두 단어가 합쳐짐. fantastic을 쓰거나 fabulous를 쓸때랑 똑같이 사용한다. 예를 들어, '그거 엄청난 생각인데!' 라고 할때, 'It's a fantastic idia!' = 'It's a fantabulous idia!'
ex) What an absolutely fantabulous weekend!!
얼마나 환상적인 주말이었는지!!
3. chillax [chi-ˈlaks]
- blend of 'chill (out)' and 'relax'
[동사] To relax; to be laid back.
relax의 뜻을 가진 chill (out) 과 결합이 되면서, relax와 똑같은 의미로 사용법도 relax와 같음. 친구가 굉장히 스트레스를 받고 있을 때 'Hey, just take it easy.' 라고 하거나 'just relax!' 또는 'hey, chillax!' 라고 쓸 수 있다.
ex) A : I am so stressed out! / B: Why dont you put on some music and chillax?
나 완젼 스트레스 만땅이야! / 음악 좀 틀고 쉬는게 어때?
4. frenemy [fre-nə-mē]
/ 영국식 [dƷaɪ|nɔ:məs] - blend of 'giant 'or 'gigantic' and 'enormous'

5. staycation [ˈstā-ˈkā-shən]
- blend of 'stay' + 'vacation'
[명사] a vacation spent at home or nearby
휴가를 피서지에서 보내는게 아니라 집에서 그냥 chillaxing 하면서 보내는 것. 경기 침체와 고유가로 집에서 휴가를 보내는 것을 말한다.
ex) All I did on my staycation was chores.
집에서 쉬는 내내 집안 일만 했다니까..
